Players take the role of a theme park technician that needs to collect batteries to repair the haywire robots. With your handy Mekabolt, use the out of control robots to your advantage to overcome obstacles and obtain the batteries across 100 puzzle platforming challenges.
dBXY worked on the music and SFX for Mekabolt, drawing inspiration from bouncy electronic dance tracks and Theme Park music elements such as increasing instrumentation and track fullness as players progress deeper into each of the Park’s zones.
In a world where the sky is blue and water is pink, with icebergs replaced by floating ice-creams, Bouncy Bullets is a colourfully vibrant first-person shooter that will task players to traverse wonderful terrains, in a bid to reach the portal that awaits them at the end of every level!
Bouncy Bullets has a lot of ‘trippy’ visuals and the audio needed to follow suit, so for the soundtrack we took inspiration from a lot of unusual places like K-pop, hip-hop, and dreamy ambient soundscapes. The sound design is just as absurd, using everyday objects like cash registers and telephone beeps to compliment mundane interactions or UI elements. The game’s soundtrack can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
War is coming whether you’re ready for it or not soldier! In Attack of the Toy Tanks, across the game’s 60 levels in the main campaign, players must take control of the provided vehicle of war and battle it out across different arenas and be the last tank standing.
Attack of the Toy Tanks is a huge battle which takes place on a seemingly miniature scale, so for the music we went with a mixture of over-the-top epic brass and strings, juxtaposed with toy instruments like xylophones and kazoos. The SFX received the same treatment with a mixture of huge explosions and gunshots mixed with squeaky toys and other playful percussive sounds.
Neon Junctions is a First Person Puzzle-Platformer imbued with atmosphere of synthwave and 80s.
Neon Junctions obviously has a distinctive Vaporwave aesthetic, which required the music to be very complimentary, hopefully not to the point of being cliché. We kept it appropriately pastiche by leaning into the synthwave instruments while injecting our usual dbxy flavour in with memorable melodies and interesting harmonic content. The soundtrack can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
Peasant Knight is a puzzle-platformer. With a twist. You're relentlessly dashing into the face of danger, namely traps such as suddenly erupting flame pits. You can only go forward, or stop completely.
The game challenges your muscle memory and hand-eye coordination, but most of the thrill comes from solving levels - each level is like a complex machine of traps that you need to navigate through and solve.
Peasant Knight was a cute little project that stretched our Medieval music muscles. There were only 3 tracks commissioned for the game but they’re all packed with pace and hummable melodies. The tracks can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
Cake Bash is a frantic party brawler where players control living baked-goods, fighting to be the tastiest of them all.
The game is developed by the super talented, British indie studio - High Tea Frog. The game will see release on various platforms including Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 in 2020
The game was an absolute treat to work on. The music called for something incredibly raw and live-sounding, something imperfect and improvisational in tone, almost like street music. We took a lot of inspiration from classic fast, quirky Nintendo tunes such as Kirby’s Gourmet Race and the Yoshi’s Island banjo theme from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Other heavy influences included Christophe Heral’s godly work on the newer Rayman titles, and the jazzy musings of Django Reinhardt.
Inspired by an arcade classic, Super Destronaut DX is a retro space shooter that pits you against an enemy more dreaded than a UFO - a scoreboard.
This is the third iteration in the ‘Super Destronaut’ series of games, and is considered the ultimate, collectors version. This optimum edition is the version dBXY was first brought on board for. We were asked to create a brand new soundtrack to compliment the overhauled graphics and brand new modes included in the game. We stayed true to the character of the previous soundtracks whilst adding our own flair and colour.
A physical edition of the game was made available through EastAsiaSoft, with a CD of the soundtrack included. Super Destronaut DX Intruders Edition is a development of Petite Games and Ratalaika Games. Published by Eastasiasoft Limited.
Chessaria: The Tactical Adventure is an award-winning strategy game which combines a rich story driven adventure with the tactical depth and breadth of Chess. The game was developed by the talented Paris-based studio - Pixel Wizards.
Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, we worked closely with the developers and backers to create a musical voice in keeping with the art style and RPG inspirations of the game. Drawing inspiration from fantasy adventure soundtracks such as Hearthstone, The Legend of Zelda and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Tetra’s Escape is a puzzle game inspired by the same blocks that originate from another classic… The goal is to save the Tetras, small creatures that can turn into different blocks, using their transformative abilities to reach an exit portal.
This game was developed by French studio ABX Games, and published by Ratalaika Games. The game released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam in 2018.
For the music we took inspiration from golden-era PlayStation 1 games such as Rayman and Croc. The game’s sound design is also the work of dBXY.
InkSplosion is a 2D twin-stick shooter full of vibrancy and colour, developed by Petite Games and published by Ratalaika Games
The game released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam in 2018. All audio aspects (music + SFX) were composed, produced, and implemented by dBXY.
Twin Robots is a 2.5D platformer where you can switch control between two little robots; They have been imprisoned and need to find the way out of each level. You can play alone, or with a friend in local co-op multiplayer.
This game achieved humble success on Wii U and Steam, so for the 'Ultimate Edition' release on Nintendo Switch the music was completely redone by the team at dBXY.
Think Peg Solitaire with cute creatures instead of pegs, and feature-filled terrains instead of a wooden board. Oddhop is a unique puzzle game, where each puzzle takes place on a hexagonal terrain populated by a group of creatures. The goal is to collect points by eliminating the creatures one by one until a single survivor remains. This elimination is carried out by making the creatures jump, or hop, over other adjacent creatures.
Created by Finnish developer, Mika Halttunen, Oddhop’s quirky and vibrant visuals called for an organic and playful soundtrack inspired by the likes of Rayman Origins and Peter McConnell’s Broken Age soundtrack.
In Plantera you build your own garden and watch it grow with new plants, bushes, trees, and animals. As you play and expand your garden you will attract Helpers; small, round, blue creatures that will assist you with your harvesting tasks.
Plantera was first released on Steam in January of 2016. Due to its popularity, it was ported to 3DS and Wii U by Ratalaika Games. Later, a deluxe edition of the game titled Plantera DX was ported to Nintendo Switch. We were brought on board for the additional music on this deluxe version of the game.
A fighting RPG with a gorgeous Japanese style! This game is developed by the unbelievably talented team behind the viral Ukiyo-e-Heroes art project.
Edo Superstar was crowdfunded via Kickstarter for $65,000, having built a fanbase from their previous Art project.
The visual style of the game is refreshingly unique and we decided to go for a cocktail of traditional Japanese scales and instruments, mixed with modern pop production and rhythm elements.
Phoenix Rising is a fan-made episodic adventure on Windows PC and possibly more platforms following (Episode One released in 2018). The game has been in development since about 2010 and has accumulated quite a large fanbase in that time. Visit the official Twitter page here. The game also has a thriving ‘Let’s Play’ community, and the Beta for Episode One receiving more than 200,000 downloads in the first 2 weeks of release.
Working on Phoenix Rising was a labour of love for us, and great fun. We wanted to inject our own flavour into the tracks, however we were obviously required to write in a similar style to the existing Pokémon games - this came naturally to us as we’re huge fans of main series Pokémon games, new and old!
